#STORY24

**

He was born in a cold august’s night, shredded in warmth of his mother, and crowned at dawn.

He was named after his father, who had fallen by the sworn in protection of his kingdom’s walls.

He was forced to be a man, as young as he was ten, and made to preside over the affairs of the court.

He was King, one who had no choice than to be one. He had no time to mingle much less to love.

And as per custom, the Kingdom would need an heir, but a child doesn’t come without the presence of a Queen. And as such, the search had begun for the one whom the crown would fit. He was a young man who had come of age, and he was told he needed to marry, as his father before him so that he could have a son, who would carry the legacy of the family’s name in years to come.

And so, the royal matchmakers went out in search, for the princess and one who is worthy, and they found, too many of them and then made appointments with the king.

The King had looked at all of them and refused.

”Your grace, aren’t the princesses in the nearby kingdom worthy?” he was asked.

”No!” The King said

”But they are all the princess in nearby kingdom” he was told

The king stared upon the princesses and turned away ”They do not please me” he said ”Surely there must be one that would catch my fancy” he says to himself ”Go, find me a wife”

And they went again, in search and then found nothing ”Your grace, you must pick from the princesses in which you have seen.” they pleaded ”It is expected that the King be married before the forth moon, and that is just barely a year away”

”There is still time, surely, one befitting shall come” he hoped.

*

The King.

Powerful in his strides, elegant in his attire. His words were like burning coal, His eyes were like fire.

For a young man he had watched his mother grew lonely and had died.

He had no real presence of a father except Lords and  chaperons his whole life.

He was made to attend to all functions, act like a man.

No..a King!

He was never allowed to cry or meant to seem weak.

He was a king, and he had to rule.

But a king wasn’t a real man unless he ruled over a woman, he was told.

”Why is it important, i shall marry when there is need” he had said to his Royal Counselor when he was much younger, while he was taught the ways if the Kingdom.

”No, you shall marry as the kingdom deems fit. Your heir would succeed the throne if anything were to happen to you”

”I am strong, fit, i shall live a long and prosperous life”

”That is what your father thought, and he was lucky, the gods allowed him time to father a son before he was taken. You shall leave your legacy ..and maybe you might have the time to groom him to your taste, to be the King you would be proud off” He was told. ”You need a bride, and she would become Queen”

”One who would bare the heir is that not all?”

”No your grace, a bride isn’t just a lady who would bare you children, she shall be your warmth when you are cold, your confidant when your men are occupied, your direction when the path is darkened, your rest when the world is in chaos. She shall be the flower to beautiful your home, your treasurer when you want things be kept in quiet, your home maker, when you want your children to be nurtured and fed, your lover, to make your blood boil and your groin sweetened. She shall be your companion, when you are old and grey, your friend away from friends where the friendship would be written in stone to test the sands of time. She shall be your calmer, when your temper is burning flames and your intercessor, when she goes on her knees to play. In her you would find the strength to go on, the will to continue to fight and the pleasure to bring joy to. She would not just be your bride, she would be Queen, one you would answer to, while your men would answer to you, one that you would adore, break bars to ensure she walks on ice, go to the ends of the world for, do all to ensure all is right. She, Queen, not only shall she be the mother to your children, she would smother you with love, patience, understanding and nourishment, she would be a mother to all and thus her heart would never lack of love, and also of worry for she shall watch over you- her husband, her children and the kingdom. She, your Queen, though she might look weak but it is on her shoulders the gods have placed the world, for while you wrestle with strengths and power, she, her nature, calmness and her soft spoken-ness would fight and win wars you can only imagine to conquer. So no, not only a bride and a Queen to bear the heir, but one who would rule by your side and one you would gladly give your heart, body, soul and all that you are to, close your eyes and let her breath over you and hand in hand, you both shall rule and give the kingdom a better life, that Queen is the one we desire that you be married to, but be careful your grace, as a King, you win wars and battles effortlessly, but with a lady, the battleground is different, albeit trickish, wars cannot be won as you think it- love, patience, understanding and words spoken in quietness would give you a long, lasting home. Do not think the hardness of a King would caution a woman, you would soon find that they are better treated with adoration and they would be meek and loving.”

He listened, understanding ”Then, i shall not pick any random lady to be my Queen”

”Indeed”

”Then find me a wife worthy of all” he had said.

His decision had caused the kingdom a little stressed. For they have searched far and wide and not a princess had got his sight.

”Your Grace, there is no more of royal lineage and blood to set eyes on, all these fine lasses are what’s left” he was told again,  staring into his hall of princesses who had come on his offer in finding a wife

”She is not amongts them” he had said getting home and walking away, he was followed by his Guardian, his Uncle.

”Nephew- of whom do you seek?”

”’ My Queen” he said entering into his chambers, dismissing the servants

”Take one, she shall be the Queen”

”I was told to choose wisely, and from what i have heard what a Queen should be, i follow on that pattern– therefore, my Queen isn’t there”

”’How would you know?” he was asked,

He frowns turning to seat, his handsome face contorted in  a  frown as he thought back to that day years ago with his Royal Counsellor

”How would  i know the Queen?” he had asked his Royal Guardian, whose hair was grey then attending to him, married for over a decade and he seemed knowledgeable. He had to be, jobs in the royal kingdom were given based on such reputation.

”How do you know when you need to be fed?” He had asked the young King then

”Hungry, i feel  a pang of it”

”Indeed, when you are pressed?”

”A heaviness on my bowels”

”Sleep?”

”Eyes become heavy”

He had smiled, hands folded behind him as he walked the garden, the young King then with him ” Do you love your mother?” The Royal Guardian continued.

”Indeed, i do”

”How so?”

The young King then frown ”I worry over her when i see her weak or a tear escapes from her eyes when she thinks of my father , the king who had passed. I smile in happiness when i see the stars in her eyes and when she walks barefoot in sand and the water kissing her toes.  When she hugs me to herself i feel safe, warm and happy. I love that she cares, even selfless too. I desire to do all that she wants for to make her happy- i would lay my life for her if she would but ask”

”Aye- that is a good thing.”

”You still do not care to mention how i would know the Queen”

”Likeness becomes Love and Love becomes loyalty and loyalty becomes companionship and that breeds bonding”

”I do not understand”

The Royal Guard had stopped to look at him then, plucking a flower and then handing it to him ”You love Red Roses your Grace?”

He noded

”Why?’
